TITLE: Olivine KI3054 Fo66 DESCRIPT

DOCUMENTATION_FORMAT: MINERAL

SAMPLE_ID: KI3054

MINERAL_TYPE: Nesosilicate

MINERAL: Olivine (Olivine group)

FORMULA: Mg2SiO4-Fe2SiO4 Fo66

FORMULA_HTML: Mg2Si4-Fe2SiO4 Fo66

COLLECTION_LOCALITY: Kiglapait intrusive, Labrador

ORIGINAL_DONOR: S.A. Morse, University of Massachusetts, Amherst

CURRENT_SAMPLE_LOCATION: USGS Denver Spectroscopy Laboratory

ULTIMATE_SAMPLE_LOCATION: USGS Denver Spectroscopy Laboratory

SAMPLE_DESCRIPTION:

Sample has been subjected to Franz Isodynamic Magnetic Separator, heavy liquid (Clerici) separation and hand-picking. Mineral separated is 100% pure olivine. Samples sieved to less than 60µm, prior to spectral characterization. Sample (fo66) is part of a of solid solution suite of Kiglapait samples.

MICROSCOPIC_EXAMINATION:

This is visually and spectrally a pure olivine mineral separate.

END_MICROSCOPIC_EXAMINATION.

SPECTROSCOPIC_DISCUSSION:

There are weak 2.3-µm alteration features. In addition there are weak but sharp 2.72- and 2.73-µ absorptions likely indicating the presence of a hydrated alteration phase(s). G. Swayze.
