SAMPLE_DESCRIPTION:

This sample of lichen was collected from Lime Creek in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado (37 degrees 54.5 minutes N latitude; 107 degrees 38 minutes W Longitude). The spectrum was measured in the laboratory under a tungsten lamp (directly overhead) with the bare fiber optic head of the ASD FR spectrometer pointed at an approximately 20 degrees off of nadir. Species identification was made by USGS Biologist Larry Gough. The appearance of the lichen was noted as "bright green, almost chartreuse, with some dark green thalli" in color with small, tightly packed thalli. The measurement of the lichen was made with it still in place on the surface of a weathered, iron-bearing rock (Sample ID = SJ96-MM1).
