SAMPLE_DESCRIPTION:

This sample contains well-crystallized kaolinite that when mixed with trace amounts of smectite and illite spectrally mimics poorly crystalline kaolinite. The sample was collected from an altered Tertiary tuff involved in a hydrothermal event about 7.6 Ma.

END_SAMPLE_DESCRIPTION.

XRD_ANALYSIS:

Clay separate contains wxl kaolinite, smectite (trace), and illite (trace).

COMPOSITIONAL_ANALYSIS_TYPE: XRF # XRF, EPMA, ICP(Trace), WChem

COMPOSITION_TRACE: None

COMPOSITION_DISCUSSION:

MICROSCOPIC_EXAMINATION:

END_MICROSCOPIC_EXAMINATION.

SPECTROSCOPIC_DISCUSSION:

The spectrum has absorptions characteristic of poorly crystalline kaolinite. XRD shows only the presence of wxl kaolinite, smectite, and illite. Apparently these components have a combined spectral signature that mimics pxl kaolinite.
