Geologic Reference Materials Program

Image of example analysis certificates of reference materials.Through this long-standing program, the USGS provides standard reference materials in natural matrices for a variety of applications. Special emphasis on silicate matrix materials for bulk analysis is a continual focus of the program leading to development of materials covering most rock types. Reference materials for bulk analysis are also developed for freshwater and marine sediments, soils, coal, and manganese nodules. The program offers a diverse set of microanalytical reference materials used in calibration or quality control programs. Materials available for study include natural and synthetic silicate glasses, and pressed powders for the study of corals, bone, sulfide and organic matrices. These materials have been most useful in the development of analytical methodologies for direct solid sampling using Laser Ablation ICP-MS and other analytical techniques.

Collaborative development of bulk and microanalytical reference materials is also available for both chemical and physical testing of samples.

For more information on specific reference materials available or to contact Steve Wilson regarding the development of new standards, please go to the Geochemical Reference Standards website or see the Reference Program Fact Sheet.
