San Luis Basin Geophysics

High-resolution helicopter aeromagnetic surveys have been flown in 2003 (Blanca and Taos helicopter surveys), in 2004 (Central San Luis Basin fixed-wing survey) and are scheduled for fall of 2005 in the San Luis Basin of Colorado and New Mexico (see map below). Much of the New Mexico portion of the survey is support by New Mexico Office of State Engineer and Taos County (through a project with New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources). The new flying is part of the Geophysics Task of the USGS "Geologic Framework of Rio Grande Basins" project that supports geologic mapping and subsurface investigations. View the 2005 survey area in more detail. Flying should commence at mid- to late December, 2005.

The data for the 2003-2004 surveys are available on-line: Blanca, Taos, or Central San Luis Basin aeromagnetic surveys.

Discussion of the Taos aeromagnetic survey is available in the 2004 New Mexico Geological Society Guidebook 55 article by Grauch, Bauer, and Kelson.
