Geophsics of the Rio Grande Basin

Middle Rio Grande Basin

Aeromagnetic Method

Hydrogeologic Features

Many geologic features and manmade structures are reflected in the aeromagnetic anomaly map (left) from an area south of Albuquerque. The map is displayed in color and shaded as though it were a relief map illuminated from the east. The most hydrogeologically important features expressed in the aeromagnetic map are faults and igneous rocks, depicted on the map on the right. Depths to the buried igneous rocks were estimated by analysis of the aeromagnetic data. Note the concealed, shallow igneous rocks near the Rio Grande that likely affect ground-water flow.
