Crustal Imaging and Characterization Team
Task Contact: Trude King
The objectives of this Task are simple in concept, although attaining each objective will require focused research efforts:
Using the prototype format for the remote sensing characterization of mineral deposit types developed during Fiscal Year 2006 for polymetallic vein deposits in the Montezuma district in Colorado, characterizations will begin to be applied to representative examples of the most common mineral deposit models. The intention is to prepare examples that can be used with the updating of the mineral deposit models for use in the future national assessment.
In the northern Patagonia Mountains, Arizona, AVIRIS data were used to map the spatial distribution of hydrothermal alteration minerals, the determination of alteration mineral assemblages and zones, and the interpretation of oxides in a leached cap overlying a concealed porphyry deposit. The imaging spectroscopy data are in agreement with previous field investigations and provide a framework for the development of exploration strategies and the cost-effective use of onthe- ground investigations.
Geo-referencing and field verification of imaging spectroscopy data for the Sierrita Mine and surrounding area was completed in fiscal year 2003. Imaging spectroscopy from both the ASTER and AVIRIS instruments were analyzed and compared. The ASTER data for the Sierrita Mine and surrounding area data were analyzed using a newly developed approach that directly compares absorption band position and shape of the remotely sensed data with laboratory standards. The results show a high correlation with the processed AVIRIS data and are encouraging for use in mapping minerals on a regional scale at a low cost.
