Isotopic/Geochronology Core Operations, Lab Support

Project Objectives

Central Region Isotopic/Geochronology Core Operations Lab Support Project provides a formal accounting and tracking method for base funding several important isotope and geochronology laboratory facilities that serve a broad spectrum of Geologic Discipline needs. These funds provide the sustaining and maintenance level of support to cover expenses not appropriate for individual projects. This support is required to assure that the capabilities represented by these facilities and staff are available to achieve present and anticipated future objectives of Programs. Central Region Isotopic/Geochronology Core Operations Lab Support project is necessary to guarantee both short term maintenance of expensive laboratories, and to provide the ability to achieve longer term (5 or more years) important objectives. Longer term objectives include expensive repairs or replacement of major instrumentation and investment in new technologies required to meet Program needs. Costs are apportioned to Programs on a "use basis" determined by documented historic records in developed business plans.

All laboratories with complex instrumentation experience periodic "down time" for routine maintenance and repairs, for diagnosing difficult malfunctions, and for development of new or modified procedures and calibrations. Some are predictable and planned, others are not controlled events, but all must be managed within normal operations of the laboratory. USGS Central Region Isotopic/Geochronology Core Operations Lab Support achieves the following objectives and goals:

  1. Maintain major laboratory capabilities and technical expertise of staff to assure these scientific components to Program goals are available as part of modern comprehensive and credible research.
  2. Develop new techniques and methodologies designed for changing goals and objectives with networking and soliciting input from other Program scientists and management.
  3. Maintain expertise in changing and emerging technologies important to Discipline and Bureau missions and continuously modify future strategies to incorporate these skills into science plans in a cost-effective manner.

Relevance & Impact

This project assures that the scientific research within projects can be achieved. Laboratory facilities need to be functional with appropriate modern capabilities (not necessarily 'cutting edge') and ready to perform project tasks as requested. This project provides base funding to the radiogenic TIMS laboratories, the stable isotope laboratory, argon geochronology laboratories, noble gas geochemistry and geochronology lab, and the thermoluminescence (TL/OSL) lab. The specialist scientific staff in these facilities provide basic geochronologic and isotopic tracer data and full collaborative scientific input to projects. These staff further provide advice and guidance to other researchers to improve the scientific outcomes of project research, through integration of isotope geochemistry and geochronology applications. As scientific experts in their fields, the Isotopic/Geochronology Core Operations staff provide both conceptual development of project research strategies, the analytical data, and scientific interpretations to projects. Products are as diverse as the scope of Program activities.
